Into The Flame is the first chapter of The Evil Within 2.

Plot

The chapter opens on Sebastian's house in flames, with him arriving just in time to try and save his daughter. Finding a way inside, he hears screaming on the second floor and heads up to Lily's room, only to find the room empty. As he calls out to her, an angry apparition of Lily appears behind him and accuses him of leaving her to die, just as he wakes up in a bar, revealing everything to be a nightmare. It's been three years since the Beacon incident, Sebastian was discharged from the force following his ordeal and took to drowning his sorrows in alcohol.

He's not alone, however, as a familiar face appeared before him, revealing to him that his daughter is still alive and that she needed his help in order to save her. In denial, Sebastian lashes out at Juli but was quickly subdued and taken to a MOBIUS installation, where he comes face to face with The Administrator, who offers him a chance to reunite with Lily using a STEM device of their own design, in exchange for him retrieving her from a destabilised Union. Although reluctant, Sebastian agrees and is once again submerged into STEM. Once inside, Sebastian briefly sees an image of his house on fire where he hears Lily screaming, before the scene vanishes and the Beacon Mental Hospital appearing in the distance and blinding him with its searchlight.

As he regains his sight, Sebastian sees a desk in the distance with a ringing communicator on it, which he grabs, revealing a recreation of his old KCPD office. Answering the call directs Sebastian to the corkboard on the nearby wall where he finds the pinned dossiers of Alpha Team, along with a brief rundown of what Union is. The chapter ends as soon as the call finishes.

Walkthrough

As soon as the chapter begins, quickly sprint towards the front entrance, which is locked, prompting the camera to pan to the right. Interact with the side door to have Sebastian smash it open with a chair and gain entrance to the house.

Once inside, the player must navigate their way up to the second floor of the house. The doorway to the left will be immediately blocked by debris, so instead go straight and take a left through the kitchen, then open the door on the left to access the staircase. Walk up the stairs and take two rights, and crouch when prompted, then turn left and enter Lily's room where a cutscene starts.

Once the series of cutscenes is over and the player is taken inside STEM, move forward until Sebastian briefly sees an image of his house on fire, then turn left as the scene vanishes and look at the Beacon Mental Hospital in the distance before it blinds the screen with its searchlight.

As Sebastian regains his sight, head towards the desk in the distance and pick up the Communicator, where a recreation of his old KCPD office appears. This is a safe haven where he can retreat to every once in a while. Answering the call directs Sebastian to the corkboard on the nearby wall where he finds the pinned dossiers of Alpha Team, along with a brief rundown of what Union is. The chapter ends as soon as the call finishes.

Notes

• At the start of the level, one can immediately head for the side entrance to speed things up.
• While taking a detour through the kitchen, choosing to go straight instead of through the door on the left will cause the closet to explode. This will not happen unless one deliberately walk past the correct door.
• During the cutscene where the Administrator offers Sebastian a chance to enter Union and save Lily, the camera briefly cuts to two MOBIUS agents lying in two of the adjacent pods, who bear striking resemblances to William Baker and Miles Harrison, respectively.
• If Sebastian is wearing an extra outfit and the current game is being played on a New Game+, he will automatically change to it off-screen after arriving at the MOBIUS STEM room. This can be observed as soon as the camera focuses back on him after the Administrator has mentioned Lily.

Trivia

• Chronologically, the events of this chapter take place long prior to The Evil Within, though since it is now a flashback of Sebastian, certain details have been altered in accordance with his damaged psyche.
  • The events of this mission stand at odds with the news report of the fire itself. While the news article mentioned both Sebastian and Myra arriving at the scene together, the mission itself depicts only the former as the sole parent who made it to the house. There is also a distinct lack of firefighters on the site, who were also mentioned in the article.
  • Despite this being the same housefire that claimed the life of Juanita Flores, her corpse is nowhere to be seen within the main house itself. This is either due to a developer oversight, or because this flashback was constructed based on Sebastian's own memory, he could have skipped over the area she died in.
• This chapter is the first in-game presence of the Handgun from The Evil Within, being wielded by Sebastian in the pub after the nightmare sequence. While it is replaced by the Semi-Automatic Handgun as Sebastian's main sidearm from Chapter 2: Something Not Quite Right on upwards, it could be obtained for real by completing all three Anima encounters.
